I began writing for the Texas Lutheran University student newspaper, The Lonestar Lutheran as a Features reporter. I wrote profiles of professors and prominent figures in the TLU community. I also wrote articles about events, groups on campus and local hangouts. After only a few months of reporting, I was personally asked to join the publication team as a copy editor. I was soon promoted to Features Editor and then Co-Editor-In-Chief of the student publication. As an editor I assigned and edited articles, provided feedback to reporters to improve writing styles and techniques, and created the layout for the Features page of the paper. As Co-Editor-In-Chief, I oversaw all aspects of the publication process specializing in editorial and advertisement sales.

While in college I also studied journalism at American University under New York Times Best Selling Author, Iris Krasnow. While in Washington, D.C. I had the opportunity to meet prominent professionals in the field such as Ben Bradley of The Washington Post, Sam Donaldson of ABC news, Helen Thomas of United Press International, Ken DeCell of Washingtonian Magazine, Evan Thomas of Newsweek, Molly Knight, contributing writer to Washington, D.C. Style and many others. Their passion for writing and journalism was contagious and very admirable. Aside from taking classes I worked as an editorial intern/reporter for Youth Today Newspaper, a nation-wide publication for youth workers based in D.C. At Youth Today, I wrote DVD and book reviews to emphasize areas of interest that would be useful to youth workers. I also conducted phone interviews with youth workers across the country to report on beneficial aspects of their careers. My peers and I at American University also put together and published The Tenley Times, a student newspaper featuring current events and happenings involving the Washington Semester Program student body.

Upon returning to Texas I worked as an entertainment and news writer/intern for the San Antonio Current. I gained experience in newspaper publishing, writing, editing and photography by working with editors and completing weekly assignments. I wrote articles on upcoming events, new restaurants and current newsworthy events.

I also have experience in radio at Seguin’s radio news station, KWED 1580 A.M. Aside from broadcasting and editing radio news, I was also a contributing writer and reporter for the daily newsmagazine, Seguin Daily News.

In February of 2007 I was given the opportunity to improve my copy editing skills by participating in a copy-editing workshop held at The New York Times headquarters in Times Square. This workshop, led by Don Hecker, The New York Times editor for staff training, taught writing and editing instruction.

I have also done free-lance work for Austin Monthly Home Magazine, a magazine that features the latest trends and styles for home décor. While my editorial background has been mostly in news and feature reporting, I also have experience writing poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction.
